Two and a half years ago, I watched an episode of Oprah in which her guest was Dr. P.M. Forni co-founder of the Johns Hopkins Civility Project and best-selling author of Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct. I purchased the book and upon reading it knew I needed to develop a workshop based entirely on this book. I contacted Dr. Forni at Johns Hopkins University and he gave me permission to do so. Dr. Forni believes if we all practiced these 25 rules our society could become more civil. Why is this so important? Based on research rudeness and incivility are costing U.S. corporations $300 billion dollars per year. Just think of what the U.S. could be doing with these monies to move our economy forward. I have spent the past two and a half years developing the workshop: The ‘Magic’ of Civility in which we are going to begin to have these most important conversations pertaining to what we can do in our workplace to cut down on rudeness and incivility. So, why the ‘Magic’ in the title? I also perform real magic and have incorporated it into the workshop. Research in England has shown that by using magic people are able to remember points better.
